Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and CBD
Like all choices as a parent, the decision to take CBD while pregnant or breastfeeding is entirely personal. There is no one “right” answer. Here is some information that may help you make a decision.
About CBD:
CBD from hemp is federally legal in all 50 states.
Broad Spectrum CBD has 0% THC in it.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is one of 140+ compounds in the hemp plant known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids occur naturally in our bodies and are found in breastmilk.
CBD is a “phytocannabinoid” - a plant-based version of what our bodies produce naturally.
CBD’s main job is to help heal our Endocannabinoid System, the “switchboard” of all the other systems of our bodies. A balanced Endocannabinoid System leads to balance in our bodies overall and can lead to better sleep, less pain, and more balanced mental health.
The World Health Organization says CBD is “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile.”

Like many areas of pregnancy and breastfeeding, there are not many clinical studies to cite about the use of CBD and breastfeeding. There have been studies on marijuana usage, but because that is based on THC, these studies are not useful in this case. That said, there is a decades-long study that shows that “Using Cannabis While Pregnant Does Not Impair Children’s Cognition.” They find that “Maternal marijuana use during pregnancy is not an independent risk factor for adverse neonatal outcomes after adjusting for confounding factors.”
We know that many women struggle with postpartum anxiousness or depressive thoughts, both of which left untreated are known to be harmful to the development of the baby and to the parent. While trace amounts of CBD may cross the barrier into the breastmilk, prescription SSRIs are known to go into breastmilk as well. If you are struggling with depressive or anxious thoughts, a clean, USDA Organic, third-party tested CBD can be an excellent option. If you do decide to try one of our organic hemp-based products, we can help you start low and slow to find the right dosage for you. As always, we recommend consulting with your medical professional should you have questions about whether CBD might be right for you. We point prenatal or breastfeeding people to the non-THC Broad Spectrum option either tincture or jellies, and make absolutely certain that the product is organic and third-party tested to insure safety and purity.
If you are looking to address pain, our Pain Boost tincture or topical CBD pain cream or roll-on are great options for you to consider. For more info about CBD and pain, click here.
More about the BOOST products:
- The Boost products are specially formulated with organic essential oils and a part of the hemp plant called the terpenes.
- There is NO CBD in the Boost products AT ALL.
- Some essential oils are known to increase or decrease breastmilk supply. Here is a database that you can check each oil individually. They also have an app.
More about the TOPICAL products:
- Our topical pain cream includes Full Spectrum hemp extract and does include trace levels of THC.
- THC used topically does not enter the bloodstream (note the image here). Here is a study about this topic.
